Black Beauty
By Anna Sewell
This book, called "A Biography," traces the history of a noble black
horse, from his youth, sleek, fleet-footed, strong, and almost a pet of
the family that owns him through his long life. Beauty's history is often
a sad one, first a carriage horse and saddle horse, when his owners fall
on sad times he is sold and abused and sold again. He pulls a London cab
in the days when a "cab" was a horse-drawn carriage, and then he is sold
to a cruel drover who starves and injures him. Yet there is still time
for a happy ending, and the day comes when Beauty finds green pastures
and kind masters again.
About Anna Sewell
Although herself an invalid and hardly able to walk, Anna Sewell's heart
went out to the sufferings of the helpless horses who powered England's
wheels before the days of engines, trucks and cars. Her touching book
did much to rouse public opinion against the cruel treatment to which
work horses were often subjected. And her pen supplied the horsepower
that helped to change the world she lived in.
