Merton of the Movies
By Harry Leon Wilson
... Would you like to know," the ad demanded, "if you are adapted to this work? If so, send ten cents for our Ten-Hour Talent-Prover, or Key to Movie-Acting Aptitude, and find whether you are suited to take it up." Merton had earnestly wished to know this . . . and at last the cheering news had come. He had every aptitude in full measure, and all that remained was to subscribe to the correspondence course ...
About H.L. Wilson and his book
Wilson's humorous twist on the old Cinderella tale is not exactly "Pretty Woman," but it is a story of romance and rescue nevertheless. And although Merton's dreams come true after an odd fashion by the end of the story he has become a sadder and wiser man. "Merton of the Movies" has been parodied a hundred times or more, but it still has the power to charm the reader (who is sure to get the point far earlier than poor Merton does). This is a true classic ... in its own way.
