GRANNY SAYS: These bars
are great for snacks great on camping trips or as a treat for a school lunch. First you make the filling
and then you make the crust. There now! Oops any left? Nope.
All gone for after-school snacks!
| 1 lb. chopped, pitted dates |
1-2/3 cup brown sugar |
| 2/3 cup orange juice |
1 tbsp. vanilla extract |
| 1-1/2 cups rolled oats |
1-1/2 cups all purpose flour |
| 1 tsp. cinnamon |
1/2 tsp. baking soda |
| 1 cup butter or margarine |
1/2 cup chopped pecans |
| 1/4 cup chopped almonds |
Dash of salt |
| Powdered sugar |

First the filling. . .
- Stirring frequently, simmer dates, 2/3 cup brown sugar, and
juice over medium heat about 3 minutes, until mixture makes a thick
syrup.
- Cool, add vanilla and puree until smooth.
And now the crust. . .
- Mix oats, flour, salt, remaining brown sugar, cinnamon and soda.
- Cut butter into small pieces and combine with crust ingredients
until mixture is like coarse meal.
- Spread 1/2 mixture in a buttered 13" x 9" baking dish.
- Cover with filling and spread remaining crust over it.
- Top with nuts and bake in 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes.
- Cool in pan.
- Before serving, dust with powdered sugar.
